Maharashtrian Favorite Street Food: Pav Bhaji | Pav Bhaji : A Maharashtrian Delicacy





I am quite passionate about eating out,  and thus means everything from five star restaurant and coffee shops to The New - Age Boutique Restaurant .  However ,To this day , the most satisfying indulgence remains the street foods from Maharashtra in Bangalore . As I started my Blogging carrier from Pune , found many varieties of Maharashtrian foods but most of the time Pav Bhaji was my choicest breakfast or evening snacks . 

If you visited Pune or Mumbai and you will walk through the bustling streets of Pune or Mumbai, the aroma of spices and vegetables wafted through the air, tantalizing your taste buds. You bound to follow the scent to a street food stall, where a vendor was busy serving Pav Bhaji to a crowd of eager customers.

A plate with the combination of spicy vegetables, soft bread, and a dollop of butter was absolute perfection.

The Story Behind Pav Bhaji :

Pav Bhaji originated in the 1850s as a snack for textile mill workers in Mumbai. The dish was created by vendors who would collect leftover vegetables from the market and cook them together with spices to create a flavorful and filling snack.


Here's a simple Pav Bhaji recipe to make your day more spicy and convenient:


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, peas) (boiled & smashed)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (DryRoasted)
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder(Dry Roasted)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 4-6 pav (bread rolls) (Roasted in Butter )
  • Chopped cilantro, onion for garnish
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice

Instructions:


1. Heat butter in a pan over medium heat.

2. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.

3. Add smashed mixed vegetables, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.

4. Cook for 10-15 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.

5. Serve the bhaji with pav, garnished with chopped cilantro, onion & lemon juice .
