Chettinad Pakoda Kuzhambu | South Indian Dish

Chettinad Pakoda Kuzhambu a typical south indian delicious and tasty curry with pakoda. This was the challenge for North Indian Team of Divya Pramil's SN Challenge. South North Challenge/SNC  of You Too Can Cook is now a well known community in this blogger world. By the rule every month a member from SNC will place a challenge to oppose team and oppose team will share their challenge. This month Priya from Priya's Versatile Recipe gave a challenge for Chettinad Pakoda Kuzhambu to North Team, and Chandrani from Cuisine Delight gave a challenge of famous Bengal Sweet name Chanar Jilipi for south based team.As I belong to North Team , somehow I could manage to fulfill the challenge for this month . Thanks Priya for this lovely South Indian delicacy. Enjoyed thoroughly.

From wiki I came to know that Chettinad Cuisine is the cuisine of Chettinad State of Tamilnadu. People from chettinad is called Chettiar. Chettiar are a majority of chettinad region. Chettinad cuisine is famous for their spicy and hot cuisines. They are using vast category of spices in their recipes. Basically they are famous in Non-Vegetarian dishes still they have so much variety in Vegetarian dishes, like Chettinad Pakoda Kuzhambu. Here Kuzhambu is a stew based on a broth made with variety of dal.




Chettinad Pakoda Kuzhambu | South Indian Dish


Prep time: 15 mins
Cook time: 20 mins

Ingredients

For Pakodas :
  • 1/2 Cup Chana Dal/Bengal Gram Lentils
  • 3 nos. Red Chili
  • 1 tsp Fennel Seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil For frying
For Gravy :
  • 2 nos. Onions finely chopped
  • 2 nos. Tomato Chopped
  • 6 Garlic pods
  • 2 nos Green Chili slit
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Powder
  • 1 tsp Red chili powder
  • oil
  • Salt to taste
For Seasoning :
  • 1 inch Cinnamon sticks
  • 2 nos Cloves
  • 2 nos. Green Cardamoms
  • 2 nos. bay leaf
  • 1 tsp Fennel Seeds
  • Few Curry leaves
For Grind :
  • 1 tsp Poppy seeds
  • 4 tbsp Grated coconut
  • 6 nos Cashew Nuts
  • 1 tbsp Roasted Chana Dal/dalia
Cooking Directions
  1. To make pakodas :
  2. Grind all ingredients under pakodas except oil.
  3. Deep fry pakodas as per uneven shape.
  4. Keep aside
To make gravy :
  1. Grind spices with little water under grind ingredients and keep aside.Heat oil in a pan .
  2. Add all seasoned spices and wait until aroma comes.
  3. Add chopped onion,garlic and ginger paste saute very well.
  4. Add tomatoes and green chili and fry them.
  5. Now add ground paste , turmeric powder,red chili powder and coriander powder and fry until oil comes out
  6. Add little warm water to make enough gravy.
  7. Adjust salt to taste.
  8. Add pakodas and give one time boil.
  9. Sprinkle coriander leaves and serve with warm plain rice or roti.
